Okay, does anyone here know how to make 'ramen?!' Some kinda noodle soup that's supposed to be really, really good?
Apparently y'gotta get a buncha ingredients like fish and seaweed and now we've finally got a real ocean to get 'em from, but I dunno where to go from there! Do I just throw 'em all in a big pot or what?

[But will she? Nah.]
You should have just asked me seeing as how I'm the one who told you about it~

[Tooootally not his fault. Never mind that he technically never even asked.]
Or at least give me the recipe next time ya talk up good food, so I don't keep wakin' up hungry for a week!

Alright. I hope you have a pen an paper ready because I'm going to give you the best ramen recipe I know~

Alright, no slip-ups this time. Start talkin' and I'll start writin'.

So ramen is more complicated than just putting everything in a pot and boiling it. But we'll get to that.
First you need some pork and salt. You can use chicken too.
For the soup itself you need... ginger, garlic, cloves, green onions, soy sauce, sake, sesame oil and of course water.
So this is what you do. You salt your meat and then you put the water, ginger root, garlic, green onions and salted pork, in a pot and boil it. Skim off any fat. Then change to a low setting and let that boil for an hour or so. Eventually you strain it and save the meat and the liquid too as it's part of your broth.
Ramen noodles don't take very long to make so all the topping stuff is important. Boil your eggs, cook your meat, chop up your vegetables. That's all the time consuming stuff.
So now it's time to finish up your broth. Boil the broth again and add soy sauce, sake, salt and sesame oil at low heat.
Then cook your noodles! Once they're done cooking you put them in a bowl, pour your broth on top then add all your toppings which can be anything really. Eggs, seaweed, and green onions are popular but whatever really suits your fancy. And don't forget your meat either.
It takes more work than a packet you get at the store but all good food does!

Was all sounding a lot more complicated than he was expecting. And he was only passingly familiar with a few of those ingredients, at that.]
And here I thought gettin' it all from the ocean was gonna be the hard part! Maybe there's a good place in this new place to get some'a those ingredients... and maybe a spice rack.
Might take a while too. Lotta the people down there are kinda... pushy. S'not just me, right?

[She laughs mostly because it sounds like something she'd have someone else do.]
And I don't know. I find everyone pleasant. They can get a touch odd if you're on your own so I try and keep one of the children close by. Normally one would get nervous around large groups but this place feels quite the opposite. Keep good company and you'll find the natives to be in much better spirits.
I NEVER GOT THE NOTIF I AM SO SORRY
[He'll never stop missing his mecha.]
But I guess I gotta find more people to walk around with if I'm gonna get anything done down there. That or hope I find a beach where the locals won't be such a hassle.
...How's that garden thing going for you, anyway?

Therefore, I would recommend throwing your ingredients in water and boiling them. See what happens.

I know it's a noodle soup of some kind, and I know it's got... uh... fish, and cakes, and seaweed, and I think eggs were involved. Didn't sound like the kinda thing you could fit in a packet.
no subject
But if you don't have the ingredients, whatever they may be, I would recommend you gather them before worrying about what to do with them.
no subject
Well, that's why I'm here askin'. For all the things I heard about ramen, the recipe wasn't one of 'em.
no subject
Ah. Well, that's a bit of a problem now isn't it? Have you considered investing in a cookbook?
no subject
Then again, I've never really... fished before, either. At least not the way it's done around here.
no subject
[Like, he just dropped a squirrel, pelt and all, into a boiling pot and it all worked out fine...]
no subject
[Maybe this was why his sister did most of the cooking back home.]
And seein' an ocean for the first time's weird enough without havin' to figure out how to get seaweed and stuff from it.
no subject
[What a tedious soup... Why would anyone even want to bother...]
Seaweed isn't hard to get. Or fish.

[In fairness, his experience 'fishing' was something a bit bigger in scale...]
no subject
I'm not stupid. I know you just need a stick with a line and hook on it. You just hold it. It's not hard.
no subject
[He'd gone from being offended to being baffled.]
Y'know you're just askin' to have that break the moment that beastie starts pulling back down below the clouds, right?
no subject
You're not fishing right.
[This fact is important to establish first.]
You fish fish out of water. If you hook a beast big enough to break your rod, you kill it. ...Or die. If you're bad at things, or not careful.
[or something.]
no subject
Right. Gotta remember these places are a bit different from what I'm used to. Never done this kinda thing by hand before. Or in water.
[Dangit, just when he was starting to get over missing his mecha.]
And I'm guessin' I'll be stuck fishin' up the smaller stuff this time, too.
no subject
[That's a background mumble, something not necessarily part of the conversation even though it's related. What a ridiculous thing to do? How could it even be called fishing?]
It isn't hard. I can do it. And show you how, I guess. We can get enough for your weird food even if they're small.
no subject
Might take ya up on that offer, too, but probably gotta find the rod and net first. Shouldn't be too hard to find with a real ocean by this new place, right?
no subject
[...]
They're fish people...
[Is this going to be illegal?]
no subject
...They are, but they're different from the ones swimmin' in the water, aren't they? So they wouldn't be mad, right?
They ain't hearin' this, are they?
no subject
[he doesn't know anything about ocean laws... fish people didn't exist in his world, outside of extremely unfortunate situations involving a deadly plague and the mutations it brings about.]
I don't think it works for them. No weird...thing. [Signet, the mental image helpfully supplies.] Right...?
[being real, he hasn't gotten too close.]
no subject
Augh, just when I thought I'd have a shot at this. When're we gonna find another ocean if this turns out to be some kinda weird crime?
A real ocean, not that little puddle at the edge of our usual island.
no subject
also it's worth noting that the palai are technically lizards and are terrified of the fish people... lalli's fantasy racist and just lumps them all together.]
Does it matter that much...?
no subject
Of course it does!! If I can't make this stuff I'm never gonna be able to stop wondering how it tastes!
no subject
no subject
And even if I could, APPARENTLY THAT'S DOIN' IT WRONG.
