In my experience, making decisions with no idea of the outcome is something that comes with life. As much as we all want to live without regrets, it's sometimes impossible -- this may be the case in this situation.
The island, you mean? It's livable, of course. No imminent danger, lush and forested. It has water and food available. If you're alright with living in huts, you'll get on just fine.
The children can of course remain there, but it depends on what development stage they happen to be at when we leave again. If they're still essentially toddlers, I'd say it would be unwise to just leave them to their own devices.
