[SUP KIDS IT’S TELEPATHY. The telepathy is a monotonous voice, possibly familiar, possibly not. But he has a specific group of people in mind.]

Okay, so it’s showtime on blue fish person invasion in less than twenty-four hours. Those of you who went to the earlier meeting know the plan and can check in with me or Jay to clarify anything. This message is for the new group of people that Qri decided to summon only two days before a predicted attack, in a tactical move so genius it remains obscure even now. Plus for anyone who missed the last memo.

The Uvi are blue fish people from the ocean above. They’re going to attack and either abduct or kill our cool lizard bros the Palai. The Palai plan on hiding and don’t expect to get anywhere with this, but we’re going to be setting out lookouts to spot the Uvi coming in and ground teams to engage with the enemy and defend the Palai. Then we plan to send a recon team to pursue them back to their base.

[SEEMS TO BE INDICATING HIS NAME? it was said in a familiar, normal person "introducing-themselves" tone. this is still very normal.]

You know when there's going to be a fight for sure? And is there even space to fight around here? I can't half open my wings in most of these streets.

We're pretty confident. The Palai are going into retreat, and I assume that after the hundred or so raid, they got pretty good at identifying oncoming threats to their lives.

[Geir... actually presents a good option.]

Can you fly? It'd be fuckin' awesome if we could get you up in the air taking out Uvi as they descend.

[the giant eye narrows.]

Tell me what you know about their weapons first. I'll have Vern with me, and I'm not going to risk him somewhere I can't protect him if there are things flying around.

They have magic that controls water. Other than that, the Palai say they use primitive weapons made out of fish bone and teeth. They're more into brute strength than advanced weaponry.

I've never actually been in a fight with armies, but I can probably deal with water...

[a considering pause, then a snap decision.]

Okay! We'll do that. And you guys who are here already wanted to defend the little lizards, right? So you're planning to kill all the fish?

[he asks in a tone of neutral curiosity; he's just trying to figure out the parameters of the fight.]

We plan on fighting back all the fish people who came here to kill the little lizard dudes. If that means killing them, I don't have a problem with it.

[They started it? It's self-defence. Dirk's moral compass is not skewed to letting attackers leave alive.]

I don't know if everyone else feels the same. Evidence suggests they're probably decently sentient.

Some people might think it's bad? Hmmm...

[a hint more thoughtfulness]

If you want me to grab any of them instead of killing them, you don't want me in the air. You'll want me down in the big square in the market, or something. If there's less space I can control it better.

The better question might be what you want. Do you have a problem killing them?

Probably not, but I've never tried it. And I don't know these fish people, but I don't know the Palai either.

[a flicker of memory at how blasted the countryside looked after he killed that one Tree root...

he doesn't have any negative emotional affect towards killing a bunch of sapient strangers in theory, but he did decide to hold off on the apocalypse because he wanted Vern to live... are these concepts on the same lines? is it not fine to kill everyone because you want one person to live, but fine to kill everyone you don't care about until you get to the person you do care about, instead? he's not sure.]

Wait, I haven't actually thought about this. Do you think there's a difference between killing people and killing everything?

[his voice is as genuinely dubious as his thoughts. oh dear.]

[While some people may be perturbed by suddenly engaging in a philosophical discussion with a dragon's eyeball out their window, Dirk is not one of those people. In fact, he welcomes it.]

Yes. It's the difference between yanking some plants out of a garden and razing the whole thing to the ground. Maybe if you're a dumbass, you'll end up destroying the garden by fucking up the ecosystem, but sometimes you need to take out a few so that the rest can survive.

That obviously invites the question of deciding which deserve to live and which deserve to die, and whether we have any right to do that.

[the answer seems well-received enough. Geir blinks slowly and then visibly files it away for processing.]

Okay. I won't go to any special effort to kill them if I can catch them in the air-- you guys on the ground can decide about that. But I'll knock them down as much as I can! And I'll stop them, even if they die. Then I can think about this later.

[this seems like a second satisfactory snap decision; he nods a little to himself. IT CHECKS OUT.]

We want to try to follow them on their retreat. They take the Palai back somewhere. Finding that might help us make a more permanent end to this.

How long are we going to be here? That lady said something about wandering around...

No idea. It will probably be until we manage to gather the magical energy Qri wants us to.

It might be nice if we knew what the fuck that was and how the fuck we were meant to do it.

That's just what I was thinking, actually.

So, she called new people so we can fight the fish! We might as well. I guess I'll see you when that happens.
