[YoRHa unit 9S, forever uncertain as to whether he's thinking at people properly]

I just wanted to let you know that 2B and I are doing renovations on that old house on the western side of the island. At the moment there's no water or electricity so it's probably not the most hospitable for humans...

But once it's in working order, this'll give us an outpost in this area.

Also we were discussing some hands-free lights for working in the dark. Devices like that would come in handy, right? Are there any other types of equipment you could use? Seems like during our downtime, that's something to work on. Maybe we can also establish what resources we've got at our disposal, too. We're a team and all, right?

[Now that they're not dealing with invading hostiles, it seems to him it's time to put his technical skills to work]

That hasn't traditionally been a human saying. I'm not sure how much you know about our history, but we have traditionally fucking sucked at using resources wisely.

Do you know who we have, other than us two, who have an aptitude for this kind of work? We can get our supplies together and check it out to see where we stand.

Our grasp of history's a bit of a work in progress, but...well. Honestly YoRHa like me are pretty darn expensive. If I died in the field, I'd come back and retrieve my old body. Can't waste that sort of thing, you know?

For this kind of thing... I'd say Alphonse would be pretty helpful. He's an alchemist and if he knows the properties of something and has the right stuff available to him he can replicate it. Don't know the limits on that, but I've been showing him a bit of my era's technology. And Jude's familiar with some hybrid using magic so he may be able to help too.

So far as the mechanical stuff goes, I'm only aware of you and me. Oh, but 2B could keep up though, even if it's not what her unit type was built for.

[IT TAKES DIRK A SECOND and then it occurs to him that 2B probably has a back-up body and then can go retrieve the former one. That makes sense.]

It might be worth putting out an open call or seeing if you get anything more from this call. We might genuinely not have many mechanics on hand.

[That she does, and the same for 9S... Or any YoRHa, really. Dying is an expected part of the job]

If it's the case, at least it's not just one of us. It's too bad there aren't other Scanners around here, but I'll have to see if anybody else has the kind of skillset we do or not.

We can manage on our own if that's what it comes to.

[There isn't any doubt here. He knows what he's capable of, and he's seen a lot of 9S's abilities. Even without 2B or Alphonse to help, Dirk is pretty sure they can pull it off.]

I'll try to talk Jake into helping too. He has more technical capabilities than he's willing to own up to.

Does he not think very much of what he can do?

[He can't really imagine not liking what one is good at, but then, he's designed to derive a certain satisfaction from carrying out the functions for which he was made]

But you're right, we'll make it happen either way. It might be a large-scale project, but it's not that hard.

It's more that he tends to play down his capabilities.

That seems kind of sad. It feels pretty good being acknowledged for your skills.

It can, but there are a number of factors that might make it otherwise. I don't want to get into the psychology of my best bro, but I can speak to the general capabilities of humans to find reasons to think badly of themselves. It's frankly without limit.

That...still seems pretty sad.

I hope it changes for him, someday. Having a skill that can help people is a good thing.

People have a habit of being pretty sad. It's an unfortunate quirk of existence.
